Loading a boat onto a trailer isn’t easy. There are a lot of factors that go into it—from skill to patience—and even an experienced boater may run into difficulty when winds are strong, the water is choppy, or the angle of the boat trailer is particularly challenging. Moving water too makes loading a boat difficult. Thankfully, it’s easier to load thanks to boat trailer guide-ons. Boat trailer guide-ons are poles or posts that usually sit on the rear of the trailer, usually above the brake lights, and jut up out of the water to make it clear and obvious where the center of the boat is. When a ramp is particularly steep or water is murky, seeing the trailer from the operator’s point of view can be challenging, so guide-ons come in a variety of lengths so there’s no question where the trailer sits. They also come in a variety of types, from post guide-ons to bunk guide-ons that are carpeted for a smooth entry and run along the side of the boat when it’s loaded. Roller guide-ons have rollers that spin to allow for an easier approach—especially for heavier boats. And you can improve on many of these with guide-on accessories, like lights and carpeting that protect both the boat and trailer.
