The tach uses the alternator to determine the engine speed. I thought it would use some form of distributor feedback. I have a value, it's low, but at least I have something. Do all tachs look at alternator? For 8 cyl inboard what should I buy?

The Sierra Lido 3" Tachometer, Sierra Part #65671P is designed to work on a Diesel Alternator engine application and your engine may require an alternator tap. Tachometers work by counting pulses generated by the ignition system, alternator, tach signal generator or magnetic pickup sender.
