They can also send texts and regular updates via the MapShare portal to keep everyone in the loop and at ease back home. No cell service is no problem for this portable, go-anywhere device. Using the Iridium satellite network, the inReach Explorer+ lets users exchange texts with any cell phone number or email address anywhere, even while simultaneously being used to track and share the journey's progress. It can also post to social media or communicate to other inReach devices in the field. Active satellite subscription is required, with annual contract packages and flexible month-to-month airtime plans available to match personal usage levels.
Track and Share Every Step of Every Journey
Turning on the tracking function of the inReach Explorer+ communicator, users can let family and friends follow their journey. The inReach device will send waypoints at preselected time intervals, so followers can track the user's whereabouts right on a computer or mobile device via the web-based MapShare portal. Users can also invite followers back home to use MapShare to ping their inReach unit and see GPS location, track movements, and exchange messages during the trip. MapShare page can also be embedded on a blog, website, or social media.
Mobile Device Pairing + Unlimited Cloud Storage & Trip Planning
Every inReach device comes with free access to the Earthmate app. For ultimate convenience, this free cloud-powered portal syncs the inReach with compatible Apple or Android devices via Bluetooth. That means access to all the inReach features right on the paired mobile device, including unlimited maps, aerial imagery, and US NOAA charts. That way users can plan trips with routes and waypoints, create preset messages and quick texts, sync and manage device settings, update firmware, download additional TOPO maps, link social media accounts, store all location tracking data, and much more. For easier messaging, users can also sync the inReach device with the paired phone's contact list to reach anyone, anywhere with fewer keystrokes.
Helping users stay ahead of the journey, the optional inReach weather forecast service provides detailed updates directly to the inReach device or compatible smartphone/tablet that's paired with the Earthmate app. Basic and premium weather packages are offered (not included). Request weather forecasts for current location or any other waypoint or destination on the itinerary.
Prepared for Emergency Situations
In case of an emergency, the inReach can be used to trigger an SOS to the 24/7 monitoring center, text back and forth about the emergency, and receive confirmation when help is on the way.
