Comments about St. Croix Imperial Fly Rod:

I bought this rod over a year ago and after the first time out promised myself I wouldn't review it right away, if I had it would not have been nice. And it could just be me too so take this with a grain of salt. The reason my headline is "confused is the rod does somethings very well while other times it is a source of frustration. The first thing I noticed is the tip and flex is very different from my Sage rods, I'm not saying one is better than the other, just different. But I digress, here's what it does well. I live in CO and see some wind from time to time and when it's blowing and I need a fast tight loop it delivers. It also mends well, I actually have to tone it down a little with this rod. It casts drys really well and you don't have to work hard to punch them out and it doesn't do bad on a roll cast either. Now the confusion- From a casting standpoint I don't think it's very forgiving. My first day on the water with it made me think I didn't have a clue on casting fly. After a little time spent with it I realized I couldn't be "lazy" when casting it and we made up. The next thing I found is it HATES to pull a nymph rig up from under the water- the tip just kinda collapses and everything lands in pile behind you- don't do it. I guess I got spoiled with my other rods because they will pick up that rig and chuck it back upstream. To summarize, I use this rod all the time on bigger water and have gotten used to it's quirks. I don't think I would ever put this in the hands of newbie.
