Bought it for my steelhead rod. I have had a 2500 series I use for walleye/pike/smallmouth for several years now that has been a workhorse. It's one of those products you don't need to think about; it just works.

I bought the 4000 model because I wanted to be able to step up to 12 or 14 lb test for salmon fishing big rivers. It's a tad much. I'd get the 3000 for salmon and even the 2500 for steelhead. It depends on what line you're using really.Great reel though...probably the best mid-level reel without stepping up to $150. The maintenance port is great too. The smoothness of the reel is unbelieveable.
