back to topIn the event of a non-life threatening emergency, HELP notifies your personal contacts that you need assistance. SPOT sends 1 message every 5 minutes for 1 hour or until Help is canceled. (Additional SPOT Assist services can be purchased to notify professional services either on the land or water.)
CHECK-IN/OK lets your friends and family know where you are and that you're ok. Message is sent via email or SMS to up to 10 pre-determined contacts, and your waypoint is stored in your SPOT account for later reference. SPOT sends 3 identical messages to the SPOT service for redundancy. The first of those 3 messages is delivered.
CUSTOM MESSAGE allows you to let your friends and family receive a custom message along with your GPS location with a push of a button. Use this feature as a secondary OK message, or transfer your personal help alert to this message function if you are using a SPOT Assist service on your Help button.
TRACK PROGRESS saves your location and allows contacts to track your progress using Google Maps. SPOT sends one message every 10 minutes for 24 hours or until SPOT is powered off.

Comments about SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger:
Bought the SPOT to have emergency communications - but as a 1 way device, I am always guessing, did the message get through or not?
Granted, the technology is good, but if the unit cannot communicate back to me, I often spend minutes upon minutes leaving the device to transmit, and the waiting game is a drag.
Im also dissapointed that when I tried a demo SPOT Connect, it was not easy to use. Bluetooth would hardly pair up with my iPhone, and when it did I found the 40 characters limiting. Again, I think SPOT is a great concept, but in practice it just does not deliver as advertised.

Comments about SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger:
Purchased item for this past Sept for remote drives across Utah.
I am a very seasoned traveller, who needed a emergency comm. system - so I gave Connect a shot.
Took very very long time creating the account, customer care had to get item to sync up since unit froze out of the box, and unit would turn off on its own - even after we downloaded the software upgrade.
LEDs were a bit confusing - and many of the transmitted messages did not make through.
No mention was made about the limitations in mountains, where the SPOT sales rep. told me that it would work ok in the rain, and if I dropped it in the water, I can just "dig it out"
Its just been a dissappointing experience, although conceptually its the right idea.
In short, I would just have a hard time reccomending i.

Comments about SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger:
Appears you can only check in every X number of hours. Can not use check in or comment to track movement. I used check in to let family know I was in the woods ready to hunt and comment to let them know I was out of the woods. Looks like I will be pay to add tracking. Can setup different profiles. Plan to have a profile for hunting, fishing with Dad, and one for my wife when she goes fishing by herself. Will cost $150 a year for basic and tracking. Does take 15 - 20 minutes to setup each profile. Not sure how long the batteries will last.

Comments about SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger:
I am up to over $200/year for service fees. That is a lot of money for a little piece of mind for a few outing a year. The best batteries will only last 7 days in tracking mode. Will need spare batteries for every outing. Was on the bike trails and tracking mode missed lots more locations then it got. The most I got was three locations @ 10 minutes intervails for several hours tracking. Did not make a usfull trip documentation.
