I did a lot of research before buying and I picked the SE Sport 300 Hydrofoil because it seemed to have the best reviews from what I could find. I found that some people do not like hydrofoils and many more think that they are great.
In considering a hydrofoil to improve something about your boats performance we should keep in mind that these add on devices are to make up for deficiencies in our hulls design. It is the law of physics that when you improve in one area you will usually lose in another.
From what I have read self adjusting trim tabs should work better but there is no place to install them on my boat because of the way the hull is designed.
I wanted something to stop my boat from porpoising and I was hoping to increase fuel economy as so many of the reviews that I read said that it would. The Sport 300 corrected both of the problems. My boat seems to now be about 2 mph slower at full throttle so the hydrofoil did cut my top speed. At the same time it increased fuel economy by 40%. I would have never believed it possible. I can accept that trade since I normally do not want to run at full throttle anyway. Another benefit is that I can now make sharp high speed turns without a cavitation problem. I can also now keep it on plane at a slower speed than I could have before without the hydrofoil.
The fuel consumption is based on the amount of fuel used to travel the same distance with the Hydrofoil installed as it was without it. All other variables being the same on a lake. With my boat, once on plane fuel economy seems to be about the same at slow speed or at high speed.
My boat is a 16' open bow runabout with a 110 HP Evinrude outboard motor. Total listed empty weight of the hull and motor is 1520 pounds.
If you are trying to figure out if a hydrofoil could help with the performance of your boat. I hope that this will help you. With the high price of gas at the fuel dock the Hydrofoil 300 has already paid for itself in the first five uses of the boat. I think that it would also improve a boats performance that did not have a problem to correct.

The Bad:
I have a 20 ft bass boat with a Johnson 150 on the back, I didn't gain any advantage out of the hole. The prop still blows out if I get too aggressive with the throttle and I didn't gain any time to get on plane. To top it all off, I lost about 5 mph on the top end... too bad.
The Good:
The foil did make a noted difference in my turning radius and crispness of response. It was suprememly easy to install and seems to be very well made. I haven't used it long enough to be able to vouch for any efficiency increases.
The Summary:
This product seems like it would be a fantastic purchase for someone who may have bought too much boat for their first time. It tightens up the steering control and in my experience brings the top end down just a touch. Stability and forgiveness... not a bad deal on the water.

Comments about Sport Marine SE Sport 300 Hydrofoil, fits 40 hp - 300 hp engines:
Man, what a difference this made. I just had installed a 2002 Mercury Optimax 150 DFI.
Increased RPM by about 1000. Having a 19 ft long Hurricane deck boat, this hydrofoil really helps in the turns. Also it quickly gets up on plane within a few seconds.

Comments about Sport Marine SE Sport 300 Hydrofoil, fits 40 hp - 300 hp engines:
I did a lot of research before making this purchase and read a lot of reviews both positive and negative... There were several positive reviews on this product which is why purchased this for my 2004 bayliner 185 w/ 3.0 liter I/O. I can honestly tell you that this was by far the best thing I could have done. The difference it had in both holeshot and handling was noticeable from the first acceleration. As a lot of reviews say this should be standard equipment. And the installation look lest that 30 minutes...I opt'ed for drilling vs. the no drill mount. I would recommend this to anyone that is looking to increase their boats time to plane ....

A:
The sport clip allows you to install the hydrofoil without drilling any holes. If you choose to not use the clip then you are also choosing to drill holes in your caviataion plate.Answered on 10/1/2012 by Justin from Overton's

Will this work with trim tabs, or will I create more drag?Asked on 9/7/2011 by Anonymous1 answer

A:
This foil will work with trim tabs and will not add drag as the foil is actually above the water surface while planed if the motor is mounted at the proper height.Answered on 8/17/2012 by Muskamoot from S.E. Michigan

Will the SE Sport 300 Hydrofoil fit a Mercury 60hp 4-stroke outboard?Asked on 5/3/2011 by Paul from Racine, wi1 answer

A:
absolutely! enjoy the ride. I had it on a 90 mercury 15'-6" V hull and it was not overpowering. It made a huge difference in quality of ride and performance for the overall boat. Quicker starts and higher top end and level ride is what you should expect.Answered on 7/23/2011 by Blue Eyed Girl - Charleston S.c from Charleston Harbor, Charleston S.C
