Purchased to replace an older Eagle 5" unit. This seemed to offer the best combo of price and features while not being overkill for a small boat. We're using it in Mexico for near-shore work in up to about 250-300' of water. It loses bottom lock in anything over about 400' with the 83/200 transducer. Not a big deal here as once you get out past more than 300' depth, all the pelagics are near the surface. The sonar modes all function as advertised. We're able to differentiate between fish, baitfish, and other bait (squid, etc.) with the HDI downscan mode. There's not a ton of structure here so haven't been able to explore the fancy bits. Runs for a couple days on a 12v ATV battery - not the best solution but all we could get here. It would run for weeks on a standard deep cycle. The interface is pretty slick, though the manual leaves something to be desired in terms of explaining the various menu options and trees. It only took a few days of on the water use to get used to. I really like the ability to waypoint something you've passed over on the sonar log. It makes it much easier to keep eyes up and outside of the boat; knowing that you can always go back to waypoint the school of fish. As for complaints, the power and transducer connectors and unit pretty cumbersome to attach/detach from the mount. The plugs are pretty big so you may have to either drill big holes or be creative in where/how you mount the finder. Overall, not perfect, but a real nice product for the money. I'll probably let this one go with the boat when I sell it, but will look at another Lowrance HDI unit for the next boat.

I am a weekend fisherman and installed this product on my BassTracker boat and love it! This is my first unit with GPS and structure scan options and it is very easy to set up and use, 5 minutes on the water and I was up and running. Worked great while trolling as well as at top speed. (45 MPH)

After much research and reading many comments on various fishfinders,I finally settled on this unit and really happy with the selection so far. I've only been out on the water once, but the unit works as described and very easy to use. It is installed in my Eagle Talon 12ft kayak and sits in the cup holder using the Ram-mount made for this unit.

This unit is designed to be mounted on a boat--but I am sure with some ingenuity it could be modified as a portable unit---but out of the box it is not designed as such.
