Comments about Humminbird 597ci HD Fishfinder Chartplotter Combo:
I bought this unit a few months ago and got a chance to use it about 10 times. Before this, I had a basic $80 unit that was nothing fancy, so it was a definite upgrade from that. The reviews I read before purchasing it were relatively consistent with the unit. The things I didnt like about it:
-The speed does jump around a lot at low speeds... however, I troll enough to know the difference between 1mph and 1 1/2mph.
-When zooming in and out on the GPS map, it shows a blank screen for 3-5 seconds until it has a chance to load.
Other than that, everything else works well on it. I am getting an ice transducer to use it for ice fishing this year and hope this will save me some effort in drilling extra holes to find out exactly where I want to fish.
Pros
- Screen Resolution/Clarity
- Screen Size
Cons
- Difficult To Install
- Difficult to Use
- Not Durable
- Poor GPS interface
Best Uses
- Target practise
Comments about Humminbird 597ci HD Fishfinder Chartplotter Combo:
This has the worst GPS system that I have used or tested to date. In the bays and on most lakes you want to know exactly where you are and have the ability to easily label waypoints - this is 1990's technology and ease of use. I would not recommend this to anyone. GPS reception is poor and takes a long time to boot up. The interface between your computer and the device is horrible - a real nightmare to use.

Q:
Does this require holes through the hull or how does it get it's information? Can I read the bottom and see rock piles, etc. with this so I don't hit them when barely moving? I'd be installing it in a fiberglass bridge boat, so I also wonder about wires from the bottom to the bridge if required?Asked on 7/26/2012 by Jeff from Iowa0 answers
