I bought this combo due to the special they had at the Deforest Gander Mountains Grand reopening. I had to take the first combo back and get it replaced as its spool was not secure and bouncing about an 1/8th of an inch around. When the fishing tech was grabbing a new reel of the last combo he dropped the real from about 5 feet. I took it out that afternoon and had some practice casts with it and it preforms well enough for a beginner with a casting rod. I am only getting backlashes about 1 in 20 casts.

Comments about Guide Series Baitcaster Combo:

i bought this combo to use at college for some bass fishing in the thick stuff and powering out those big bass. I didnt even get to try it out i was putting line on the reel and the guide broke and wouldnt move side to side. I am limited on income and thought this would be a good combo. i guess you get what you pay for. I will be returning it for the abu garcia tomorrow.

the line gets behind spool on nearly every cast causing the line to break after fighting to get line unwraped behind spool

Comments about Guide Series Baitcaster Combo:

You have to turn the brakes pretty much all the way up to prevent backlashing. Therefore you can't cast very far. With just the slightest backlash, the line gets in between the spool and the housing and either cuts the line or gets wrapped around the spool shaft. I love the rod but am taking it back for a refund, due to similar reviews.

I should have read the reviews before buying, only good thing was I bought on sale, so not out full price. very poor construction, line gets in behind spool and ends in a tangled mess, am going to try to shim spool, may or maynot work. I do like the IM 6 rod though
