  • Q:

    1. What type and size fasteners should be used to secure the cap to the piling?

    2. Some of the pilings are 8 1/4" and a few others are 8 3/4". What size caps do you recommend?

      A:

Thanks for your questions. We recommend 1" stainless steel screws like item 34391. I would use 3 screws per piling cap, evenly spaced around the base of the cap. I would also pre-drill the plastic cap. This will help the screws start in much faster and also prevent you from dropping many of them in the water versus trying to start the hole with just the screw tip. Pre-drilling is not necessary but is best in the long-run.

The piling caps are a hard plastic versus a flexible rubber cap. This allows them to keep their shape better but they won't have much stretch to go over the piling. Even so, for your 8 1/4" pilings I would use an 8" cap. The inside dimension of the 8" cap measures just under 8 1/4" and I think it will give just enough to fit over the piling. If not you could shave a small amount of the top of the piling to get the piling cap started and then press it down to give you just enough overlap to screw it in. This would be a better option versus putting a 9" cap on an 8 1/4" piling.

For the 8 3/4" piling you will need to using 9" piling caps.

      A:

Well the 8 and 9 inch round coneheads are the same price and the 10 and 11 inch coneheads are the same price. They are offered in white or black. The difference is the diameter. Other than that they are the same price that it just how it is.
