Product Description
dock_edge Dock Edge Howell 550 Dock Float. The convenient design of the Howell 550 makes assembling your dock much easier! This rugged float is made from rotationally molded black virgin polyethylene with a consistent 5/16" wall thickness and 1/2" at fastening points for extremely strong resistance to splits and punctures. Recessed flanges and center trough allow float to be used on 2' or 4' centers. Each float has 10 easy to get at locations from which to attach the stringers. Recessed corners allow the float to be positioned tight into the corners for maximum stability. 24" x 48" x 16"H with 550 lb. flotation capacity. Backed by a 10-year warranty against defects.

    How are these used as replacement floats under an existing dock? Do I need to remove the top deck to drop them in or do I need to have the dock lifted? If the latter, how can this be done for a roughly 6' x 20' L-dock without contracting with the local dock repair company?

    Does this dock float have a plugged drain hole in it....we need something we can partially sink, move under dock, then drain to raise.

      A:

      No this product does not work like that. Dock floats are filled with buoyant foam so that they can hold a load. The buoyancy rating is given to float the whole float above the water. This float is rated for 550 lbs. To sink a float this size half way you would half the buoyancy rating which comes to 275 lbs. Therefore if you take half of the estimated weight of your dock then divide that number by half of the buoyancy rating you will find out how many buoys you will need. For instance, if your dock weighs 2750 lbs. then half of that is 1375 lbs. 1375 lbs divided by 275 lbs (half of the buoyancy) would give you 5 floats needed for the floats to sit half in the water and half above the water. Our suppliers do not make a dock float that has a drain plug since they are filled with foam, because that would damage the foam.
