I've owned about a dozen Carhartt arctic-lined duck coats, which usually last me 2-3 years of brutal outdoor abuse. This coat has the added advantage of being completely waterproof, which is a big plus for me; I find the yellow plastic raingear which my company provides to be uncomfortable. Now I can stay warm and dry without the added layer of latex. The coat is very warm, despite being relatively lightweight compared to the traditional arctic-lined duck. I would rate it even slightly warmer, because it stops wind much better than the cotton shelled duck coats. I live in the northeastern U.S., and we just received 20 inches of snow here. I was out shoveling and snow-blowing for 12 hours over the course of 2 days, and the coat kept me very warm with temps in the low 20's. In addition to the coat, I wore a thermal undershirt and 1 cotton sweatshirt. I was sweating profusely, but as advertised, the coat breathes very well. Below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, I think I will need an additional layer, most likely fleece will do. The collar snaps closed to keep the wind out, completely negating the need for a fleece-neck or scarf-type wear. Further, the hood has (three very strong) velcro straps that smartly close right over the collar, enhancing the effect. It is very comfortable once you get used to its lightness, and it looks very good. When you work with your hands as I do, the cuffs on coats tend to wear very quickly. This coat has a certain slipperiness to its outer shell, which seems to save on cuff wear so far. It gets dirty very quickly, but cleans up very easily with a sponge and soapy water. I work so often that I no longer have "work clothes" and "dress clothes", and this coat looks pretty presentable for a working guy to wear pretty much anywhere. The concerns I have: The outer shell is tough, but the pocket liners are too thin and are definitely going to bust open with the kind of use I put these coats through. Stuffing a tool, or even car/truck keys, into the pockets gives me the dubious feeling that they will tear at any minute and that eventually I will be forced to retrieve my stuff from some hidden corner of the coat, beyond the pocket lining. There is nowhere to safely stuff a pen or pencil because of the thin pocket situation. I am always very carefully placing my pen on the inside left-breast pocket, which is a big, sloppy pocket which just sort of hangs there without any stiff support. If the jacket were heavier and stiffer, it would be easier to put things in and out of the pockets; it is a much softer coat than the Carhartts I am used to. The coat's inner liner is light and surprisingly warm, but again, it is pretty thin, and I am gingerly putting it on each time, to preserve it as long as possible. Overall, I am liking it more and more, and I am glad I took the gamble and crossed over from the arctic-lined duck coats to this one. The advantages over the traditional arctic duck outweigh my concerns, and again, I really like this coat. It is a very good value, and I wouldn't mind replacing it every other year or every second year, which is all that I can expect of a work coat.

I don't know if I got a bad lot or what, but I get wet every time I wear this stuff. I have long depended on Carhartt for my work wear, but not for my rainwear apparently. I was very disappointed when this jacket started leaking in the shoulder seams and over the years has progressed to not even needing to wear the thing because it's just going to get wet. The jacket leaks, the pockets hold water and at the end of the day I am miserable. I wouldn't recommend these to anybody who works hard out in the weather. Try this one again Carhartt, I expect more from you.

J175 warm comfortable

Comments about Carhartt Waterproof Breathable Jacket (Style #J162):

I currently work in a cold envirement, inside and I tend to go outside a lot. At times for extended periods of time and some of the work is not very labor intensive so there is a bit of standing around. Seems like in the winter months the wind is very constant also. I was tired of having to doudle wear coats, lots of layers just to keep warm. I've had the coat for about a month now, temps from 10 to 45 F, sun, wind snow and rain. So far I love this jacket. Its not bulky, very warm but not too warm when temp above 40-45F (haven't had it in warmer weather yet). Water proof. the hood is insulated. overall so far just a great jacket. A little stiff at first. Havent washed it yet will do that this week. May take out some of the stiffness. I am a very picky shopper when it comes to cloths and jackets (wife hates to shop with me). I was conserned about the price, a little more than what I like to pay for a coat but this jacket is worth it.

Great for drivers

Comments about Carhartt Waterproof Breathable Jacket (Style #J162):

Cold weather, snow storms, getting in and out of your tractor we needed a shorter cut jacket that does not get in the way of controls and still can handle the job. This jacket is warm but not too warm ,tough and nails ,water proof and the snap off hood is a big plus. Black as the grease that gets on everything. We all wear it and love it.

Prepared for Anything

By Anonymous

Comments about Carhartt Waterproof Breathable Jacket (Style #J162):

This coat is the perfect warm outer shell for daily wear in temperatures above zero or so. For extreme weather the large hood will pull over a warm hat (like a Carhartt Work Cammo 2 in 1 headwear/hat). I wore it turkey hunting in 35 degrees and sleet. I was bone dry and warm. In the spring I plan to zip out the vest and continue to wear the jacket in the rain. Imagine being completely pleased with the same jacket under all conditions! You will be with this garment.

J175 Insulated Jacket

By ATVman

from Reno, NV

Comments about Carhartt Waterproof Breathable Jacket (Style #J162):

This is the best jacket I have owned. I wish I had it when I lived in MN! I live at 5000 ft on a ranch north of Reno where it gets very windy, snowy and cold. I have an 1800 ft driveway and large pad area to plow with my ATV, and then my neighbor and I plow out all the other neighbors and the main road! Then we plow out the trails to everybodys horse corrals. After a full day at this, I have never been cold or wet. I really like the tight-fitting hood and collar. Now I have to buy another one for my wife so that mine is there when I need it!
