Product Description
blackfin The most vulnerable part of your lower unit is the skeg. It often ends up damaged, requiring repair or replacement. Now, the revolutionary Blackfin provides a breakthrough in skeg protection, repair, or replacement. Blackfin is made of a rugged, nylon composite, and it's easily installed, saving the time and expense of a trip to the marine shop. Unlike typical skegs, Blackfin offers performance enhancing features that provide better handling, quicker plane times, and more steering control. Comes with all you need for a do-it-yourself application, including special marine adhesive and complete instruction. Sizes are determined by your lower unit gear housing measurement: S(10-1/2" to 12-1/2"), M(13-1/2" to 14-1/2"). Exception: Mercruiser Alpha One measures medium but requires small instead.

I HAVEN'T INSTALLED YET, AS 'DRY FIT' SEEMS QUITE LOOSE & I'M CONCERNED ONCE I GLUE IT UO, IT MAY BE DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN PROPER CENTER LINE POSITIONING. I FEEL THE BLACKFIN SKEG COVER SHOULD BE A MORE SNUG FIT EVEN WHEN DRY FITTING TO MAINTAIN ACCURATE CENTERLINE POSITIONING. I AM CONSIDERING RETURNINNG THIS PRODUCT FOR A STAINLESS ONE WITH MOUNTING SCREWSS TO MAINTAIN A HIGHER DEGREE OF CENTERLINE ACCURACY.

      Comments about Blackfin Skeg:

Several years ago I added a Blackfin Skeg to an Alpha drive on my 1988 20'classic DONZI. As anyone with a fast (60MPH+) pocket rocket equipped with an Alpha drive knows, handling can be squirrely since the Alpha skeg is sooo, so small...the Blackfin Skeg is a great addition to any Alpha drive, offering greatly improved steering control at speed, moderate steering improvement at low & idle speeds and noticeable hole shot improvement. Now ordering another one for my 22' Scarab with a Bravo drive big block Merc...it certainly is a product worth the money & can't do anything but help! STOP READING & JUST BUY ONE!

      Comments about Blackfin Skeg:

I put this Blackfin Skeg on my 1999 Glastron GS180 Fish and Ski, which has a smaller 115 HP Johnson outboard. I followed the directions to the "T" as far as installation goes, and so far have not had any problems. The lakes up here in Minnesota are very low this year and I had already tore up a prop from hitting bottom. Since I have put this on the lower unit and switched to a new prop, the new prop has yet to have any damage on it. I have felt the lower unit hit bottom, but instead of the "thud, thud, thud" you would expect, there was nothing. For less than $100 this is a GREAT product. ONE THING: I did have to notch out a half circle area where the lower drain plug is on the lower unit, but this was simple to do. Make sure you make the notch (if needed) BEFORE you glue it in place.

          Comments about Blackfin Skeg:

The Blackfin Skeg protector is an outstanding product; I've had one on every boat I've owned because if installed correctly this one small item can and will save U a lot of money.
I hit a submerged floater on the lake a couple of months back and the entire skeg was broken off my lower unit BUT the Blackfin was still intact!!!! if that wasn't enough to convince me I was told by a person with an insurance company that without having had the Blackfin installed I would/could have totalled the motor!! Love my Blackfin and will have one on any boat I own from now on.

              Hello JR,

You will probably need the small Blackfin Skeg but to be sure you will need to measure from the front of your lower unit to the back (where the prop will start). Please see the attached information: http://www.overtons.com/assets/prodman/Blackfin_brochure.pdf

              Hello Kent,

I do not have the lower gear measurement for your 2008 Mercury 60 HP. If you would measure from the front edge of your gear housing back to where the propeller hits the rear of the housing, that will let you know if you will need the small (10.5" - 11.5") or the medium (12.5" - 14.5").

              Thank you,
              Steve

              Hello Paveman,

As long as your measure from the front of the prop to the tip of the gear housing and it measures between 12.5" to 14.5" then you will use the medium. If you unit measures 10.5" to 11.5", then you will need the small. I am attaching the diagram of how to measure for the correct size: http://www.overtons.com/assets/prodman/Blackfin_brochure.pdf.

No. The smallest size Blackfin Skeg will fit a 10.5" to 11" skeg.

              Hello Nativetx03,

Yes. The Blackfin Skeg should work for you application but I would recommend that you measure from the font of your gear housing back to the beginning of your prop. If it measures between 10.5" to 11.5", you will need a small Blackfin and if it measures from 12.5" to 14.5" then you will need the medium. I am attaching the instructions for measuring: http://www.overtons.com/assets/prodman/Blackfin_brochure.pdf

              Hello Rick,

You will need to remove the damaged Blackfin by cutting the bead of adhesive that was placed at the top of the skeg. The skeg will not come off easily, but it will need to be removed, sanded and cleaned before the new Blackfin can be installed. I am attaching the installation link for your review: http://www.overtons.com/assets/prodman/Blackfin_brochure.pdf.

Yes. The Blackfin Skeg will work with your Mercruiser Bravo II outdrive. However, I do not have one here to measure to advice you on what size you will need. I am attaching the diagram of how to measure for the correct size that will fit you outdrive.
