Comments about Standard Horizon HX300 Handheld VHF Radio With USB Charger:

Although I purchased this radio personally, I use it mainly in connection with my U.S. Coast Guard Auxilliary boat crew duties on various patrols, as well as on my own watercraft. The radio is easy to use, has all the features and channels needed to monitor and communicate with the various agencies and units required as well as the normal civilian units. The radio has good range, and the hi- low- power setting is useful for use in a long-range, or short-range environment. The volume is adequate to be heard even with loud engines and wind noise while underway. One of my only less than positive comments I can make about the radio is at higher volume levels the audio will get "buzzy." Probably a function of over-driving the waterproof speaker. The radio has good battery life, I've used it for up to 9-hours on patrol. I also have the optional AAA battery pack which I keep in my abandon ship kit bag for additional time. Speaking of abandon ship, the water resistant and floating features make it an excellent choice for use in this scenario too. The radio also has a flashing light that's activated when the radio hits the water. This feature is useful at night if it goes overboard for retrieval. The radio's display and controls are also well done. buttons are easy to use, even with gloves, and the display is large and well back-lit for use at night. Overall, I believe the radio is well-built and has the performance and functionality of radios costing much more. I'm quite pleased with my selection.
