Despite the poor reviews, I bought this because I did not want to drill holes in my ventilation plate. I called the mfg regarding the reviewers who lost the device. I was told that if I followed the instructions and used Loc-Tite and a longer bolt if necessary, the gadget would stay on. The results were spectacular. The hole shot was much improved as was turning. It made the boat (19' Mariah w/ 260 hp Merc)usable for skiing and towing whereas it really was bad before.
I liked the results so much I ordered another for my wife's 22' pontoon boat w/ a 90 hp Merc 4 stroke. The boat handles much better and is quieter. Also almost no wake. Top end increased by 2-3 mph on the pontoon boat but decreased on the Mariah by 5-6 mph. I really don't care about the top speed but I did care about the hole shot and the handling.

I liked the idea of not drilling holes in cavity plate. Foil went on easy and did all that it claims. Took boat out to winterize and noticed it was cracked in 3 areas. Foil is held on by dropping gearcase anode then sliding foil over cavity plate then you rebolt anode. Plastic that is used to secure to anode is weak and doesn't hold up to pressure. Apears other purchasers on other web sites lost the foil, and anode plate during use. Some had prop damage.

Comments about StingRay Sting Ray XRIII Senior Hydrofoil Stabilizer:
This thing is the second that I have had. The first broke when someone else was driving my boat. Thought they beat it up. Second broke on me after hitting a small piece of debris. Prop tosses it into the "unbreakable" plastic destroying any money saved on fuel. Poor design. Too long and round. Whale tail design works just as well and is more durable.

Comments about StingRay Sting Ray XRIII Senior Hydrofoil Stabilizer:
Great unit providing quicker and stronger hull-shot starts.
NOTE - a friend installed one but lost it on it's maiden voyage as the engine bolt to be used for the install was not long enough given the spacing required for the fitment. The alloy that the cavitation skeg (not sure of the technical term) is made of is soft, so you should ensure that the bolt goes in to the thread as far as possible. To be certain of this I purchased an aftermarket bolt that was 5mm longer which seemed to have worked well...

Comments about StingRay Sting Ray XRIII Senior Hydrofoil Stabilizer:
1st thing I put on our 18' Crestliner Mirage w/150 Merc Optimax back in 2007. You'll need to change your prop or it will drag your RPM's down and you'll loose top end. Went from stock 23 pitch prop down to a 17 stainless steel for recommended engine RPM range. Top end went from 34mph to 42mph with 2 people, gear and 40 gallons of gas. Trolls now at 1.5MPH The boat will actually turn now without capitating! Fuel ecomony is much better and I have over 5 years and 300 hours on this product with no issues!

Comments about StingRay Sting Ray XRIII Senior Hydrofoil Stabilizer:
Product was very easy to install. Brings your boat on plane very quickly, and can maintain plane at much lower rpm's as stated. Only complaint is that, my boat is very hard to steer with this installed! Installed on a Hurricane Fundeck with 115 HP Yamaha. Not sure the trade-offs are worth the price.

Q:
Dear Sir / Mdm,
This is Jon from Singapore. I ordered a Stingray Stealth sometime last year to install onto my Pursuit 2550 with a outboard Suzuki DF300.
On my maiden test with the hydrofoil, the boat took off very nicely, but half way thru, I was forced to use my trim taps, thinking something amissed, and true enough, the Stingray Stealth gone total stealth.... missing... drop off.
Do you think I did not screw it tight enough?
Now think of either getting one more or trying the XRIII.
Comments?
Thanks,
JonAsked on 3/2/2012 by Anonymous0 answers

Q:
Will the StingRayXR111 fit on an OMC (now Volvo) 5.0 liter I/O,
without drilling or am I better off purchasing a bold on device. I don't understand about the anodes. My 19 foot Four Winns only has one, on the forward edge of the stern drive.
I don't wnat to make a mistake here and damage the stern drive. This product says it requires no bolt holes drilled into the stern drive. Many of the critiques deem to say " no " it had to be bolted on anyway, or cut with a band saw to make it work.
# 1 concern is "less than zero" damage to my boat. Can I return it if it breaks, or if I cannot get it on without drilling.
Will Overton's pay the return shippin costs. But I would like it to work. Again would you recommend a bolt on model over this?Asked on 8/16/2011 by Four Winns Pend Oreille from Spokane, WA0 answers

I believe it will. It should capture your prop wash and cause less bow rise. Especially if your noticing "the heavier in the rear feeling" at lower speeds.Answered on 6/16/2011 by Fireman Jim from CInci, OH
