You can not go wrong with this product. When I found out this product was available to replace carpet this was a no brainer. Never understood why carpet was installed in a boat. However this is the best alternative!!

The only con during this process would be with the application roller, the full size roller was great for larger areas but it does not fit all nooks and cranny's. They don't have a 4" roller to reach in those areas. I used a normal paintbrush and worked fine because it picked up the granules without issue, I would not however user a normal 4" household roller, the granules do not pick up.

But all and all you can not go wrong with this product, this has saved me well over $1900 and I would do it over again!!

I used this for the front casting deck on my 18' aluminum bass boat. I sanded the whole deck, used the recommended primer, followed all directions, even used the roller they sell on here. I applied it a month ago, haven't taken the boat out since and already it is separating and peeling in the 90 degree angles. The flat deck area seems to be holding fine. I put new carpet in the rest of the boat but wanted to go with this since I throw a cast net a lot from the front deck. We'll see how it holds up through a season but more than likely I will just scrape it off and go back with all carpet.

Have used this product more than once on the deck of my sailboat. The boat's original fiberglass non-slip finish was worn. I replaced it with this and found it to be an effective non-skid and comfortable on bare feet.

Plan to use it on the shower floor this winter when boat work is on hold for the year.

I would recommend this product to anyone who wants a durable good looking finish that is easy to install. I sprayed the product using a testure gun and it turned out perfect. I like it so well that I am going to use it on my Carver as well. Use good fine line tape and the edges of the finish line will be crisp.

....buying older boat that has some surface (no water penetration) cracks in the gelcoat. Would this be an appropriate product to cover those cracks...giving the added benefit of having the non-slip surface?

              Thank you for your question.
If you are asking about covering gelcoat cracks in the floor---I would first us a filler such as our 3m filler # 81513 before applying the Tuff Coat. While the Tuff Coat may initially fill and cover the existing cracks---they may eventually print through. To ensure a top quality job--fill the voids with appropriate filler before applying.

            • Staff Reviewer

              A:

Some cleaners will have a reaction of this sort. If this is an area that you had to use cleaner on before applying the tuff coat this could explain the bubbling occurrence. Unfortunately the best thing to do is to remove the coating from these areas and reapply it after washing the areas with water to remove any chemicals that may be present underneath.

You will have to use the water based epoxy primer along with this product no matter what surface you are applying it to. Yes it will work for epoxy boat decks.

I recently had a carpet put on the floor of my pontoon boat (2 years). It is impossible to care for and keep clean.
I definitely want to get this product to replace the carpet later on this spring. Can you tell me how to remove the carpet and adhesive to prepare for this primer and coating product?

            • CUSTOMER CARE

              A:

If it was glued down then you should remove anything off of the deck that would keep the carpet from coming up. Then find a good starting point, usually in a corner and pull it up as carefully as possible. Then just lightly sand the top of the deck before you apply the tuff coat primer.

            • CUSTOMER CARE

              A:

You will use the metal primer for aluminum and steel and that adheres very well to metal and the actual tuff coat non-skid coating will adhere directly to the primer. You will have to use the primer for the non-skid coating to work out properly.

            • CUSTOMER CARE

              A:

1 quart of primer and one gallon of tuff coat (2 coats tuff coat needed for proper application) cover 40-50 square feet. Square footage is found by multiplying the length by the width. Use that to find out how much square feet you have, and then divide by 40 square feet per gallon and that is how many gallons you will need for one coat.

          • Q:

Do you need to apply 2 coats, and if so do need to reapply the primer over the first coat, or just apply the 2nd coat over the first coat.

No, just apply 1 coat. You need to apply 1 thick coat.
