The time it took to install was not a problem.. The problem is that the slat openings are too wide for the fiberglass bow. When I go to put my cover on, the boe is pulled down because it doesn't seat right in the slat. I thought this would be easier than what I use now to keep the water from pooling on my cover, but its not.

Comments about Attwood Marine Slat Sockets, 2-pack:

Product worked great until 2 broke and there is no way to fix them since they are cast. I have 8 sockets, and 2 broke so far in about 4 years. Screws tend to loosen, and must be tightened periodically, or a larger screw installed.

these sockets were of decent quality for the application but even if the price, which i found reasonable was a little higher, it would have been nice to include the stainless screws

Will these work to mount slats on a gunnel mount to make a boat cover? do they mount upright? Thank you.

My late brother had these on his boat (16 ft aluminum). They were mounted on the inside of the gunnel and the support boards were cut at an angle to accommodate them. They worked very well.

These have worked for me for the last 35 years or so. They mount inside the gunwale with a built-in slight upward angle. Don't mount them upside down !! NO, they do not mount upright on top of the gunwale. Buy the hardwood slat at Home Depot moulding dept. $1.19/ft. and cut to length. Experiment with the arch needed before cutting but usually cut about 5 inches longer than the direct flat width between sockets to give a good arch. The trick is to keep water weight from pooling on the cover and you will have no problem with breaking the slats; slats last for years, and easy to replace if needed in the distant future.

            • Q:

What is the size of the opening for the slat? Is there a angle to the mounting surface, for the opening to have some degree of pointing upward?

                A:

The opening size is not available. The wood bows and fiberglass bows are 6 or 8 foot long, so if your boat is just a little bit less than 6 or 8 foot the bow will bend up itself to fit into the slat. The width of the boat determines if this will work for you and how much it will bend the bow. The fiberglass bows will need to be sanded down on the ends just a little bit to fit into the slat sockets. There is no angle in the slat sockets or anything like that.

1 3/4in height & 1/2inch in width are the dimensions of the opening. Sorry about the previous message

I believe 1 and 3/8 inches wide or so. Buy the wooden slat at Home Depot [ in hardwood moulding section $1.19/ft. ] Buy hardwood as they are also there in pine. These slats are the right width and always in stock. Yes, there is a slight upward angle to the socket to accept the arched approach angle of the slat. Never had one break; didn't know they could break under normal use. I also use the plastic rail clip type for the bowrider area cover support. Fasten them to slat to prevent rolling around railing and loss when removing slat to uncover boat when in the water.
