                  Yes it inflates. Each section has a zipper in the nylon cover and an inflatable plastic tube-type unit underneath. There are about six or seven of these things and it takes a long time to inflate the whole thing the first time. After that, no problem. The plastic tubes are very durable and will outlast the nylon cover.

                  It's not rigid, if that's what you mean. If you want it down you could let the air out of (or just not inflate) the two tubes in the footrest section.
